Technical Information - Spurs

SpurExplaination

Gary starts with a piece of steel and cuts the bands.  The shanks are cut from a thicker piece of steel.    Each pair of spurs is numbered.  He stamps the number and his name KELLER or G.KELLER inside each heel band then bends the band into a U shape.  The shank is welded onto the band and a slot is cut in the shank for the rowel.   Staples are welded onto the heel area of the band and swings and buttons are added.   The spurs go through several stages of finishing that includes filing, grinding, sanding and eventually polishing.  Sterling Silver overlays are soldered on.  Then the spurs are given a patina of plum brown or French Gray.   Then I hand-engrave the sterling silver and give them a final polish.
